Human Relations
After a busy week, our students returned home. Beyond the official schedule they used the opportunity to get to know each other better. Socializing certainly is the best use to be made of in-house classes.

Excursions
Our junior students went on excursion yesterday. Their Economics tutor had arranged very interesting visits to the the Federal Ministry of Finance - including an architectural tour through this historical building - and to DIWecon, the consulting company of the German Institute for Economic Research.

Guest Lecture
Yesterday evening, Hildegard Müller, Chairperson of the Executive Board of the Association of Energy and Water Management, gave a lecture on “Energy Supplies – Current Situation and Future Prospects”. An energetic discussion ensued.

Career Day
A career day is scheduled for today. First, three panels provide insights into various fields of work, their specific recruitment procedures and future employment trends. Then students have the opportunity to visit a workshop on either International Recruitment Procedures, European Careers or How to manage Change in Jobs.

Simulation Game
Today, the in-house classes have started with a simulation game. Students are elaborating and acting the various roles they were assigned. The discussion focuses on transitional justice in Carillia.

In-House Classes
Next week, our students convene in Berlin again for their in-house classes. Besides classroom teaching of various modules, there will be excursions and a simulation game. Moreover, a career day will involve students in panels and work shops in exploring their career chances in the international sphere.

FUBiS Recognized for Meeting Quality Standards
The International Summer and Winter University of Freie Universität (FUBiS) was the first of its kind in Germany to receive the quality seal of the U.S. American Forum on Education Abroad. Worldwide, nine universities have so far met the standards of the Quality Improvement Program (QUIP). The QUIP review process assesses teaching, support for students, academic environment, and the quality of preparation for the learning environment abroad.

Online Educa 2009

Transatlantic Relations
Christoph Heusgen, advisor on foreign and security policy issues with Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel, will give a lecture on "The importance of transatlantic relations in the age of globalization" on November 27, 9 till 10.30 a.m., John-F.-Kennedy-Institut für Nordamerikastudien, Freie Universität Berlin, Raum 340, Lansstraße 7-9, 14195 Berlin. The lecture is open to the public.

FU Political Scientists among the Best in Europe
Political science at Freie Universität Berlin is among Europe’s top addresses for students in master’s and doctoral degree programs in this discipline. In the 2009 “Excellence Ranking” by the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE), Freie Universität’s Department of Political and Social Sciences was found to be particularly strong in research as well as internationally oriented and was included in the “Excellence Group” of the 18 best German universities. Best ratings were received above all in the following five evaluation categories: number of publications, mobilitiy of students and faculty, international students in master's degree programs, and international doctoral candidates.

FU Berlin among World’s 100 Best Universities
According to the new ranking by the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE), Freie Universität is one of the 100 best universities in the world. As THE announced in London, Freie Universität is in the 94th place in its latest university ranking. That is 43 places better than the previous year and 78 better than in the first ranking in 2005. Among the world’s 100 best universities, no other university managed a larger leap forward. Freie Universität is third among German universities surpassed only by the University of Heidelberg and TU München. Read more here.

New Module
A new module is being offered now: History. Students observe and discuss major problems of East European history and develop generic skills applying this historical knowledge to the analysis of current politics and policies.

Graduation
After a week filled with learning the in-house classes came to an end with a highlight on Friday. Graduation of our fifth run took place at ‘Villa Kreuzberg’. The Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany addressed a speech to the guests, an alumna shared her impressions of the time subsequent to her studies, a jazz band played, and a buffet was offered.

Guided Tour
Yesterday our students learnt about the Berlin wall on site. When walking along today's Bernauer Straße, photos helped to visualize the times when the wall was built. The short reconstructed border strip provided at least an idea of what the wall looked like. The tour was completed by an account about how the wall fell.

Gesine Schwan
A high-level guest enriched our in-house classes. Professor Gesine Schwan lectured on "Good Global Governance". A lively discussion ensued after her philosophical reflections.

Coming Monday, we will welcome our students in Berlin again, the sixth run students for their third meeting, the seventh run students for the start of their studies. As usual, in-house classes are a mix of classroom teaching and social events. One highlight will be the graduation of the fifth run on Friday.

Online Educa Berlin 2008

Three Runs Meet in Berlin
We welcome our new students from the 6th run to our program! Together with the 5th run students they are in Berlin for a week of in-house classes at the beginning of October. On Friday of that week, our graduates from the 4th run receive their diplomas and become EES Online alumni.

Master Conference 2008 at Freie Universität
On July 17 and 18, Freie Universität Berlin hosts this year’s Master Conference “Master in Praxis” aiming to bring together universities offering practice-oriented Master's programs and companies. The two-day conference seeks to define requirements for study programs corresponding to the demands of the economy. The Master Conference envisages to strenghten the standing of hands-on Master's programs and to foster the dialogue between education and business. Orientation Week
This week, the Center for Global Politics organizes an Orientation Week which is addressed at former Erasmus students who spent some time at Freie Universität. The German research foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) announced last Friday that Freie Universität Berlin is among the nine best German universities and will be awarded the title of university of excellence. This confirms all the endeavors of the last years to move this university forward, and to establish it as a distinguished international network university. Our programs under the roof of the Center for Global Politics played their own role in making this huge success possible.

Graduation
Students of the 3rd run were officially presented their Master certificates during our graduation ceremony in Potsdam. Among others, His Excellency, Ambassador of Lithuania in Germany, Evaldas Ignatavicius, addressed and congratulated the graduates. The evening was accompanied by the jazz band "Niels Fölster Quartett" and a buffet.

DAAD networking
With 14 branches and 48 information centers the DAAD has created a worldwide network to promote the German Academic Exchange. From June 26 to 27, all DAAD country experts and 140 representatives from 80 German universities, amongst them three members of the Global Politics team, met for the second time to the so-called “network conference (NeKo)” in Bonn. 51 country tables offered the opportunity to inform about strategies and projects concerning university cooperations abroad as well as marketing strategies to export German education programmes.
