Admission

Participants of our Master of Arts program must be postgraduate, that is, a prior university degree (B.A., M.A., Diploma, state examination etc.) is required. Preferably this degree has been obtained in Humanities or Social Sciences (including Law and Economics). But exceptions for applicants of other fields are possible under certain conditions. An interest in Eastern Europe is important, meaning the desire to increase one's knowledge of this fascinating part of the world. Participants are expected to work across various disciplines.

Participants have to be fluent in English. In addition, basic knowledge of at least one East European language should exist  - yet this linguistic proficiency can be developed during the duration of the program.

Participants must have adequate electronic equipment at their disposal that is able to deal with various multimedia material. Internet access and a personal email account are mandatory.

Tuition fees amount to 5,950.00 € per year of study plus the regular registration fees of Freie Universität Berlin, which currently amounts to 117 € per year. Tuition fees for the four-year part-time program amount to 3,225.00 € plus 117 € per year. Costs arising from the in-house classes must be paid by the students themselves (travel expenses, room and board).

A pilot run of the program was launched in October 2003. From that on, new runs started each October, the ninth run in October 2011. Seven runs graduated already. The tenth run will start in October 2012.

The online application should include:
  • university certificate and diploma supplement, transcript or similar description of studies completed (certified translation if it is written in any other language than German, English, French, Spanish or Italian. Chinese and Mongolian certificates, however, have to be attested by the German Embassy in Beijing or Ulan Bator respectively.)

EES Online is a full time M.A. study program which offers a limited number if part-time study places. If you wish to apply for the part-time option, please explain your choice in your mission statement and also indicate whether or not you would also consider the full-time option (in case all part-time study places have been filled). Please be aware that the tuition fee for part-time studies is higher than for full-time studies.

Please hand in your application via the electronic application system available on this website. Applications for the next run starting in October 2011 can still be handed in, even though the deadline passed already. Please contact us for any question.
