Program
East European Studies Online provides its students with knowledge of Eastern Europe. The advanced graduate degree program teaches the necessary skills for employment by public and private organizations in or concerning the region and also for further scientific work.
The program consists of three different components:
- the online modules offered via internet (for a sample unit see section on e-Learning)
- four one-week (Monday through Friday) in-house classes spread evenly over the two years
- a Master's thesis.
The complete Online Master's program accounts for 120 ECTS credits. The duration amounts to two years. Five runs already completed the program and our seventh run started the program in October 2009.
Tuition fees amount to 5,950 € per year of study plus the regular registration fees of the Freie Universität Berlin: namely 115 € per year (cf. our regulation on fees) for the two-year full-time program. Tuition fees for the four-year part-time program amount to 3,225 € plus 115 € per year. Costs arising from the in-house classes must be paid by the students themselves (travel expenses, room and board).
The Master's degree will be awarded if all in-house classes have been attended, all modules have been completed successfully, a report on the internship or study project has been handed in, and a Master's thesis has been completed. Moreover, advanced language skills in an East European language have to be proven.
Without knowledge of at least one East European language, access to the different mind-sets and cultures within Eastern Europe is relatively difficult. Thus, basic linguistic proficiency in one of the national languages of Eastern Europe has to be proven as part of the admission requirements. Moreover, throughout the program an augmentation of this language ability has to be achieved. No credit, however, is earned for the fulfillment of this language requirement, since it is a necessary tool for this type of interdisciplinary area studies. UNIcert I and II are approved certificates of linguistic proficiency. As sufficient offers for language learning exist, the online learning course itself does not supply them. Assistance in the search for suitable opportunities is available.
Here are the official regulations:

- Regulation concerning Studies
- Regulation concerning Exams
- Tuition Statute
(Please note: There are currently only German versions available)
In Germany, in-house classes are recognized as "Bildungsurlaub". Tuition as well as all other costs incurred concerning studying can be claimed in your tax declaration.
After you completed East European Studies Online, you become part of the EES Online alumni network.
