Introduction and Tools

  • To identify and evaluate key tools and methods of East European Studies
  • To analyze main analytical lenses used in East European Studies

General topics
  • Disciplinary versus area studies approaches
  • Competing and changing notions of Eastern Europe
  • Different types of data sources in East European Studies
  • Key features of and different approaches to political and economic transformation in Eastern Europe
  • Analytical perspectives on nationalism in Eastern Europe

Assignments
Students must normally complete and pass a specified number of module tasks as well as submit and pass one research assignment.

 

Example tasks from the Introduction & Tools Module
1. Put on a hat of a geographer and think of a research question that would engage one or several components of a geographical way of thinking in the context of Eastern Europe and explain why this question/issue is important to study (100-150 words).
2. Propose a schematic research design using one of the five designs discussed in unit 10, chapter 5. Why would that design be the best one to implement? (200 words).
3. Combine the two tasks and submit them via the assignment function
