Methods

Freie Universität Berlin's advanced graduate degree program East European Studies Online combines online self-study (e-learning) with full-time attendance periods (in-house classes, mostly in Berlin) - it is a distance learning program with on-site elements.

The e-learning part of our program works with an online learning management system (Blackboard). Participants receive a password that enables them to enter this learning environment. Communication with instructors and fellow students takes place via email. Blackboard works best with Windows (98 upwards) and the Internet Explorer (5.5 or later versions).

In-house classes serve to get to know one another in person and to deepen particular points of interest in more traditional ways of teaching like seminars, lectures, and discussions. They offer the chance to meet the other students, the instructors as well as the program team in person. In-house classes take place in March and in October. They start on Monday morning and finish by Friday evening.
